Hyattsville’s southern boundary is marked by the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River; the eastern boundary follows the Northeast Branch of the Anacostia River, then up a rail line to Madison Street, then Highway 1, then 43rd Street, then Adelphi Road up to University Boulevard; and then the western boundary runs down the dwindling Anacostia River again. Other major routes through Hyattsville include Queens Chapel Road (Route 500), Adelphi Road, and University Boulevard.

Hyattsville has a number of large parks with excellent facilities. These include:

  • David C. Driskell Community Park - This large park situated on the banks of the Anacostia River includes ball fields, forests, and trails, as well as a recreation center and splash park with swimming pool.

  • 38th Avenue Neighborhood Park - Also along the Anacostia River, this park includes its own ball field, basketball court, tennis courts, and playground.

  • Heurich Park - Near the intersection of Ager Road and Nicholson Street, this facility includes a fenced dog park, playground, and turf field.

  • University Hills Duck Pond Park - A natural park with a large pond at the northern end of Hyattsville. Connects with Lake Manor Community Park and the Adelphi Manor Recreation Center. 

Shopping in Hyattsville

Along the East-West Highway 410 in central Hyattsville, there is a large commercial area with locations for shopping, entertainment, and various services. Principal among these is the Mall at Prince George’s. This area includes many restaurants, and stores like Home Depot, Target, and an H&M. Included in the services for this area are a transit hub, medical facilities, theaters, and a school. 

 

Hyattsville has undergone major revitalization projects over the past two decades with a new arts district just north of the intersection between Highway 1 and Baltimore Avenue. The area now includes a number of unique cafes and restaurants.

Hyattsville History

In 1982, part of Hyattsville was designated as the Hyattsville Historic District and added to the National Register of Historic Places. The bulk of this district is made up by the areas Hyattsville Hills, Downtown Hyattsville, and Castle Manor. Specific historic sites include the Hyattsville Post Office and Hyattsville Armory.
